What is it?
Babesia or babesiosis is the diseased state caused by the protozoan parasites Babesia Canis and Babesia gibsoni. Although mostly affecting domestic dogs throughout Asia, Europe and Africa there has been a few recent reported cases in the UK in the county of Essex. It is believed to have been brought into the country by a pet who was travelling on the ‘Pet Passport’ scheme. There is concern that the parasite could be spread via wildlife such as foxes and badgers.
